“We stayed for 2 wonderful days at the Grand Old Duke. The photos didn’t do it justice. The apartment is beautiful, period features but still warm inviting and family friendly. Betty was so accommodating and lovely, we can’t wait to come back.”

One word…perfect. This heritage listed building right in the heart of Battery Point is a reflection of a bygone era and you really do feel like you are living the dream. The location of this grand old beauty backing on to the historical Arthur Circus means you can walk anywhere and not even start the car. We have stayed with Betty many times over the years and she is a gem. We stayed in the upstairs 2 bedroom apartment which has magnificent views over Battery Point to the harbour and up to Mt. Wellington. We were even lucky enough to wake up to snow on the mountain on our very first morning. The apartment is spacious, well appointed and the heating is more than adequate. For the same cost of an impersonal hotel room, you can have all this space and privacy! Our favourite restaurant Da Angelo is a 2 minute walk up the road as is Jackman and McRoss bakery/café. Do yourself a favour and have a night or two in this gorgeous old building. You will not be disappointed.”

“I can give 3 compelling reasons to stay at the Grand Old Duke: (1) Great location, (2) Great service from Betty, and (3) Great heritage building.
Our family of 4 stayed 3 nights at the upstairs unit and loved it. From the minute you stepped in the door it felt just like walking into a fully-equipped and fully-functioning home. All you literally need to do is bring your suitcase of clothes and a grocery bag of food and you’ll feel right at home.Betty is very accomodating and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The old-world décor of the unit fits right in with the heritage status of the house which used to be a pub. The only minor quirk is that you have to enter the 2nd bedroom to access the master bedroom (which was no issue for us but perhaps could be for those needing greater privacy). In summary the upstairs unit is spacious, well-appointed and very comfortable.
A variety of good restaurants and our favourite café Jackman & McRoss (buy back their excellent croissants for breakfast!) are all within a 5 minute walk along Hampden Rd. The excellent deli Wursthaus Kitchen on Montpelier Retreat and the supermarket Salamanca Fresh next door on Salamanca Place are only a 10 minute walk away.
Try out the Grand Old Duke as a great alternative to a hotel room or a generic serviced apartment.”
