Hobart does not sleep over winter, in fact there’s a huge selection of events and festivals to keep you buzzing over the cooler months.
The cooler weather means bonfires, warm food and good drink are at the forefront of our minds plus the usual selection of favourites continues to entertain. Here are a couple of our top picks…
DARK MOFO – June 10-21 2016
A selection of art, music and theatre with a dark and different twist. Events across Hobart. Find out more at http://www.darkmofo.net.au
FESTIVAL OF VOICES – June 30-July 17 2016
Choir music, respected vocalists, short courses and workshops culminating in the City of Hobart Bonfire & Big Sing. Banish the darkness of winter and bathe in the warmth of music and a massive fire in Salamanca Place on the 8th July. There are plenty of free events plus dozens of concerts. Visit https://festivalofvoices.com/ for details.
HUON VALLEY MID-WINTER FESTIVAL – 15-17 July 2016
Banish bad spirits from the apple orchard and help ensure a good crop for next year. Sound strange? Well maybe it is, but there’s plenty of good food, good cider and bonfires to help you get in the pagan spirit. More at http://www.huonvalleymidwinterfest.com.au
RICHMOND FARMERS & MAKERS MARKET – every Saturday 9-3pm
Located 25mins from Hobart in the historic town of Richmond, this local market hosts an array of fresh produce and creations from local artisans. Stroll through the streets and be sure to visit the famous convict-built bridge over the river – it’s stunning! http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/event/richmondvillagemarket
LARK WHISKY TASTING – 7 days from 10:30am
Taste Tasmania’s – and perhaps the world’s – greatest whiskeys at the Lark Cellar Door on Davey Street, just a short stroll from the Grand Old Duke (luckily). If whiskey’s not your thing, choose from a selection of craft beer, gin, cider and wine and cheese boards. Lark has been winning awards all across the world so don’t miss out on the opportunity to taste it while you’re here. More at http://larkdistillery.com/cellar-door/
GOURMANIA FOOD TOUR – bookings only
Love food and want to eat the best in Hobart? But not sure where to start? A food tour with Mary or Jo will show you the best places and teach you everything from the skill of latte art to where to find the best croissant. We recommend doing this early in your stay so you can take advantage of your newfound knowledge throughout your trip. Don’t miss out http://www.gourmaniafoodtours.com.au
MONA – Wed-Mon 10am-5pm
The unmissable MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is hosting a new exhibition from May through August. Cameron Robins’ Field Lines combines a mix of photography, videography, sculpture, drawing and sound. Hop on the ferry from Elizabeth Pier and make a day of it – explore the museum and make sure you have time for lunch and a drink or two on the lawn.
